ABOUT SAMBA FOOTBALL

In Brazil the game of football is omnipresent and thriving, in the poorest of shanty towns the white and black ball and the music is constantly up in the air.

-Don’t forget the children of Brazil (Pelé)

Brazilian football is concomitant with technique, beauty, joy and playfulness. To play ”brazilian” is the best mark a football team can get, and perhaps the legendary right winger Garrincha was the proper incarnation of what we mean when we say ”brazilian football”.

Garrincha is associated to a notion which still and always is important to brazilian football lovers: Alegria do povo-joy of the people. Football without delight and joy is not real football. Because real football, in the brazilian sense, rocks in samba rythm, it is music.

The African presence in brazilian culture and in brazilian football is evident, something that we wanted to underscore in our documentary,

In Brazil the game of football is omnipresent and thriving, in the poorest of shanty towns the white and black ball and the music is constantly up in the air.

In this documentary it´s shown how football and samba music go hand in hand and how football has a life of its own, as a source of joy in the midst of poverty and destitution.
